چکیده

The morphology and ultrastructure of the Dufour gland of a pseudomyrmecine ant is de scribed. The gland has an unusually large volume but possesses a very thin epithelial lining. Its morphology does not constitute a specific subfamily character as in some ant subfamilies. Analysis by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry of the glands of three species showed them all to be rich in saturated linear hydrocarbons (C ]7:0 and C i5:0 dominant) and isopropyl esters of the common fatty acids. Each species produces its own characteristic mixture of these substances. The most abundant ester in Pseudomyrmex ferruginea is isopropyl oleate and in P. sp. A it is isopropyl palmitate, in P.flavicornis there alate female of P. ferruginea contained a very similar

Dufour glands in the hymenopterans (Apidae, Formicidae, Vespidae): a review.

Associated to the sting apparatus of the aculeate hymenopterans is found the poison gland, originated from the glands associated to the ovipositor of the non-aculeate hymenopterans and the less derived Dufour gland, homologue of the coletterial gland of other insects, and found in all hymenopteran females. The Dufour gland functions is mostly uncertain in hymenopterans but in ants it is involve...

Exocrine chemistry of the myrmicine ant Zacryptocerus pusillus (Hymenoptera: Formicidae).

Minor workers of the ant Zacryptocerus pusillus have unusual exocrine secretions in both their mandibular and Dufour glands. The mandibular glands contain a 3:1 mixture of 4-heptanone and 4-heptanol, a mixture found only in the related species Z. varians. The Dufour gland contains a mixture of 13 aldehydes from C9 to C18, not previously encountered in ant secretions. The venom glands gave varia...

Secretion of the Dufour Glands of Two African Desert Ants, Camponotus aegyptiacus and Cataglyphis savignyi (Hymenoptera: Formicidae)

-Dufour glands of minor workers of Camponotus aegyptiacus contain a mixture of linear and methyl branched hydrocarbons and a trace of dodecyl acetate. Major workers contain a similar mixture of hydrocarbons but also large quantities of dodecyl acetate, some other long chain acetates and traces of propionates and farnesyl acetate. Cataglyphis savignyi has pentadecane as the most abundant compoun...

Foraging behavior in the ant genus Messor (Hymenoptera: Formicidae: Myrmicinae)

The genus Messor consists of 113 species of seed harvesting ants that are found in grasslands, semi-arid areas and savannahs in both the Old and New World. A full spectrum of foraging strategies occurs in Messor, ranging from individual to group foraging, with the latter having evolved several times. This paper reviews foraging strategies and the underlying behavioral mechanisms found in specie...
